The Diocese of Southern Ohio has two major funds which provide grants for ministries that meet human need. Projects serving Appalachian communities receive a major portion of the annual allocation of both funds. To be eligible for funding from either, a program must have significant volunteer and financial involvement by an Episcopal congregation or entity.

New programs -- or new initiatives of established programs -- are eligible to apply for start-up funds from the William Cooper Procter Fund. Procter grants may be awarded for up to three years on a devolving schedule. The consultants of the Procter Fund are also available to provide technical assistance to congregations in designing effective programs. Contact Ed Burdell or Bill Woods, airinc@juno.com for information on how to apply to the Procter Fund or for planning advice. They can also help you identify other potential funding sources.

Ongoing operating support is available from the diocese's Episcopal Community Services Foundation. While the foundation can only fund a portion of the project's cost, these grants can be extremely helpful in leveraging other grants. For instructions in how to apply, contact Ariel Miller at ECSF@eos.net or www.ecsfsouthernohio.org.

The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio makes grants on an annual cycle with proposals due in September. The emphasis is on job creation but social services are included. Contact Leslie Lilly, Director, or check out their web site at www.appalachianohio.org.

The federal government’s faith-based initiatives grants are administered by different agencies in each region. To find out the sponsor in your area, contact Wanda Hairston or Jennifer Simon at the Governor’s Office of Appalachia 614-466-9228.
